Relicensing Education Program

All licensees must satisfy the Council’s Relicensing Education Program (REP) requirements by completing a Legal Update course in each licensing cycle. Relicensing education helps ensure that all licensees stay up-to-date with the skills and knowledge to continue providing a high level of service to real estate consumers.

When you apply to renew your real estate licence, you must provide proof that you have satisfied the REP requirements by successfully completing a Legal Update course within the past two years.

Each year, new content is developed for Legal Update courses specifically designed to meet the needs of:

  • Trading Services licensees,
  • Rental Property Management licensees, and
  • Strata Management licensees.

You are only required to complete one Legal Update course, even if you are licensed to provide more than one service (e.g. trading services and strata management services).

For any other information that isn’t covered on this page, contact the Council’s education department by emailing education@recbc.ca.

Relicensing is Changing

As of January 2018, the Council is introducing an updated Legal Update course that will include online, self-paced learning and a one-day classroom session.

Licensees must complete both components of the Legal Update course before they can apply to renew their licence.

The online component of the course is self-paced and must be completed at least one week before the classroom component. There are quizzes and evaluations throughout, to ensure that you thoroughly understand the material before going on to a new section. In most cases, it will likely take a total of 5-6 hours to complete the online component of the course.

The Legal update 2018 course fee is $275. This fee covers the expanded delivery model and enhanced content. Any surplus will fund future content and delivery development.

The Council strongly recommends that you register for the Legal Update course at least 8 weeks in advance of your licence expiry date, to ensure that you have ample time to complete the course and submit your licence renewal application.

How to Renew Your Licence

As a licensee, you are responsible for accurately reporting your REP course completion on your renewal application form. You must submit proof that you have completed the appropriate Legal Update REP course in the last two years.

Attach a certificate of completion, or a copy of your education transcript from the course provider. Make sure it includes:

  • your name
  • the course name, and
  • the date the course was completed.

If your licence renewal application does not include documentary evidence that you have completed a REP course in the last two years, your licence will not be renewed until you have provided proof of completion.

Licensees With Disabilities

In keeping with the BC Human Rights Code, it is the Council’s goal to create an ongoing education program that is accessible to everyone and ensures fair and consistent treatment of all licensees, including those with a disability. Licensees with a disability that would prevent them from completing a REP course may request special accommodations and arrangements.

If you wish to request an accommodation, you must provide appropriate assessment and medical records (including medical diagnosis and prognosis). All information will be kept confidential and used only for the purpose of facilitating accommodation.

Written requests for accommodation should be made 30 days in advance of registering for a course and must be submitted with supporting documentation to the Manager, Licensing Education.
