YEAR IN REVIEW
Message from the Executive Officer
The vision of the Real Estate Council of British Columbia is of a self-regulated organization that is “a leader in industry integrity, innovation, and viability.” Over the past year, we have continued in our path to realizing that vision. By enforcing the requirements of the Real Estate Services Act (RESA), setting appropriate standards of practice, ensuring that professional education and training are in place for licensees, and keeping licensees and the public informed and aware of the rapidly changing real estate industry, we maintain and enhance the professionalism of the sector, and build public confidence.
2013-14 was a year of sustained growth in the profession across the province, and a year in which significant progress was made towards the Council’s strategic goals. As we enter the final year of our current strategic plan, we are proud to note that many of the objectives of the plan have been met, with others underway.
Education: Essential to Professionals
Notably, the Council has continued in its efforts to ensure that pre- and post-licensing education for real estate professionals is of the highest calibre. Over the year, ten educational seminars for strata management licensees were provided in locations around the province, and a video of the seminar presentation was made available on the Council’s website. We look forward to continuing similar educational initiatives in the coming year, including the introduction of a new Applied Practice Course, the culmination of an ongoing collaboration with the British Columbia Real Estate Association.
Self-Regulation: A Shared Responsibility
It takes the combined skills, knowledge, and commitment of many individuals to fulfill the mandate of a self-regulating profession. I would like to thank all the Council members for contributing their expertise over the past year and, in particular, to Chair Marshall Cowe and Vice-Chair Susan McGougan, for their leadership. Thanks as well to the Council’s dedicated staff, and to the many volunteers and industry stakeholders whose efforts help to support the work of the Council. Together we are making BC a leader in the Canadian real estate sector.
